XL500R engine repair advice needed

Messaggio da baldock » sab set 11, 2021 5:10 pm

Hi,
I am rebuilding my 1982 XL500R engine, but I have a problem with lining up the new balancer chain.
I have painted the edges of links 1, 9 and 25 white.
Link 25 is lined up with the input shaft sprocket tooth that has a punched dot on it (the weight on the sprocket is hanging downwards).
Link 9 is lined up with the crankshaft sprocket that has a punched dot on it (when the piston is at TDC)
here is the problem......
The sprocket on the front balancer shaft of the XL500R does not have a punched dot on it.
I have been told that you just position it with the weight hanging downwards and line up its edges with the marks on the housing.
However, I can't see any marks on the housing.
Can anyone please explain this in more detail as I can't progress with the engine rebuild until this has been done?
thanks

Thanks for your reply.

I have the Haynes manual but it only shows the XL500S method which has markings on each of the 3 sprockets and a different spacing of 1, 9, 27.

The XL500R only has 2 marked sprockets and I have no idea how to line up the 3rd.

thanks but I've found out now.

For anyone who wants to know,

Link 25 goes on the tooth with the punch dot on the rear sprocket (you can check or move it if necessary through the gap in the crankcase). Pull the chain until the weight is hanging down at the bottom, but its edge (9 O'clock) lines up with the arrow marker on the housing (left of the gap).
Pull the conrod up to TDC and put link 9 on the sprocket tooth that has a punch dot.
Line up the front balancer weight on the right hand side of the engine. Let it hang down with the edge (9'Oclock) lined up with the marker arrow on the housing. Now go back to the left hand side of the engine. When the front weight on this side is pushed onto the shaft (with the 2 punch dots in line), the link 1 will be on the sprocket tooth directly behind the large engraved line on the weight.
Now the chain just needs tensioning and the job is done :thumleft:
